What Was the Tang Dynasty Yidao? From Ring-Pommel Traditions to Ceremonial Sabers

The term yidao here refers primarily to the ceremonial saber described in Sui and Tang institutional and ritual contexts. It was not a single standard battlefield sidearm carried throughout the Tang army. Instead, it was closely associated with palace guards, ceremonial formations, and the visual expression of rank. Understanding the yidao requires separating institutional texts, tomb imagery, excavated fittings, and modern reconstruction.
The Yidao in the Tang System of Four Saber Types
The "Tang Liudian" divides sabers into four types: yidao, zhangdao, hengdao, and modao. It describes the yidao as having a dragon-and-phoenix ring and gold or silver decoration and as being carried in ceremonial formations, while the hengdao functioned as a sidearm. This classification primarily reflects institutional purpose. An ornate appearance alone is not enough to identify an object as a yidao.
The source text uses the written form zhangdao( 鄣刀) for zhangdao(障刀). Modern publications may use 障刀, but discussions of the historical system should preserve the wording of the primary text where appropriate.
Ring-Pommel Traditions and the Yidao
Mature ring-pommel steel dao already existed in China during the Han dynasty. The Tang yidao continued and developed ring-pommel ornament, placing particular emphasis on dragon-and-phoenix imagery and precious-metal fittings. This does not mean that every object from Han ring-pommel dao to Tang yidao followed one identical line of development; period, region, and function still produced important differences.
A Saber of Court Ceremony
Dragon-and-phoenix imagery and precious-metal decoration reinforced the yidao’s imperial and ceremonial associations. When carried by palace guards or displayed in important ceremonies, it functioned both as a weapon and as a visible sign of order and status. Its fittings and appearance should therefore not be judged only in terms of battlefield efficiency.
Terms such as qianniudao and changdao are not used consistently across every historical text and modern study. This article does not treat them as automatic synonyms for yidao; each term must be interpreted according to its specific source.
What Tomb Murals Can Tell Us
Guards in Tang tomb murals are often shown with long sabers, ring pommels, or blades held in both hands. Such images can help us observe suspension methods, the outline of fittings, and ceremonial posture, but a mural is not a technical drawing. Identifying a depicted weapon as a yidao still requires comparison with inscriptions, the figure’s status, contemporary texts, and excavated objects.
For the same reason, it is not sufficiently secure to identify another object in the original image directly as a modao. When visual detail is limited, uncertainty should be retained rather than turned into an apparently definite claim.
Reconstructions and Film Are Not Artifacts
Historical reenactments and screen productions can help audiences imagine the visual atmosphere of ceremonial sabers, but costumes, length, ring-pommel design, and suspension methods may be artistically modified. They are useful for interpretation and communication, but they cannot serve as historical evidence on their own.
East Asian Ring-Pommel Traditions Require Separate Evidence
Ring pommels and dragon-and-phoenix decoration appear in several parts of East Asia, where local forms and aesthetics also developed. Connections among Tang yidao, Korean, Japanese, Tibetan, and other traditions should be compared object by object according to excavation site, date, and structure rather than described as a single one-way transmission that preserved the form unchanged.
From Ceremonial Saber to Material Craft
The yidao shows that ancient weapons could serve ceremonial, political, and social roles in addition to combat. Understanding it requires respecting the distinct limits of institutional texts, archaeological objects, and visual evidence.
